The Hart House Review is seeking new friends to join us for our 25th year in print.  Successful applicants will have a sincere interest in contemporary Canadian literature.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Managing Editor

The Managing Editor is functionally second-in-command of the journal, reporting directly to the Editor in Chief.  Your primary responsibility will be to manage/direct the workflow of the editorial board.  You will also assist the Editor in Chief in all matters of financing and budgeting; marketing and advertising; and event coordination.  Finally, you will serve on the editorial board and help to curate the Hart House Review.  You must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; a strong work ethic; and a loving, intimate knowledge of fine literature.  Some work experience is required.  Familiarity with publishing operations is an asset, but is not required.  This position is open to all second-year students and above, including graduate students and non-student members of Hart House.

Fiction Editor

The Fiction Editor holds a senior editorial position.  Your primary responsibility will be to oversee the selection and editorial process for all submissions of short fiction.  You must have a loving, intimate, and comprehensive knowledge of fine literature (especially Canadian).  Previous editorial experience is an asset, but is not required.  This position is open to all second-year students and above, including graduate students and non-student members of Hart House.

Editorial Associates

We are searching for three Editorial Associates of diverse backgrounds and interests.  Your primary responsibility is to review all incoming submissions of prose, poetry, and visual art.  You will also be expected to help out with the general operations of the journal (including event coordination, advertising, logistics).  You must have a sincere and curious interest in literature and other forms of creative expression.  No experience is required.  Applications open to all undergraduate students, especially first and second years!

How to Apply

Follow these instructions carefully.

Write us a short email.  Somewhere in your email, tell us:
– your name, college, and year of study
– the position to which you’re applying
– why you want the position
– why we should want you to fill the position
– some interests or previous experiences that you consider relevant to the position
– some of your interests that are not strictly relevant to the position (introduce yourself!)
– your availability for interviews on September 24, 25, and 26

Make the subject line look like this:  APPLICATION for [position]

If applying for Managing Editor, send your application to harthousereview@gmail.com before 11:59pm on Friday September 18.

For all other positions, send your application to harthousereview@gmail.com before 11:59pm on Saturday September 19.


You may only apply to one position at a time.  However, if you are unsuccessful in applying for the role of M.E. or F.E. but we still think you’re a strong candidate, you will be considered for an Associate position.  We look forward to hearing from you!
